UN officials concerned about death of human rights activist Azimjan Askarov

UN officials are unhappy that the Kyrgyz authorities previously refused to release activist Azimjan Askarov, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, who recently contracted coronavirus and died in prison. This was stated at a briefing by the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Liz Trossel. According to her, the 68-year-old Askarov should have been allowed to leave the prison on the basis of humane considerations, since due to age and poor health, he was one of the people who were most vulnerable to COVID-19. Trossel also demanded that the Kyrgyz authorities ensure a quick and impartial investigation into the death of Azimjan Askarov, and pay his family monetary compensation.
