Indonesia condemned the Philippines' ratification of the anti-terrorism law

The representative of Indonesia to the intergovernmental commission on human rights of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Yuyun Wahiningrum, condemned the ratification by the Philippines of the anti-terrorism law signed by President Rodrigo Duterte, reports Antara. According to the representative of Indonesia, the law threatened the fundamental rights of citizens, including freedom of opinion, assembly and association in the Philippines. I am very concerned about the too broad definition of terrorism, which allows the authorities to take random actions, violate the rights to privacy and suppress opposition groups, explained Yuyun Wahiningrum. Efforts to combat terrorism were indeed important, but that step must be taken to respect human rights and existing legal norms. If not, ratification of the law will reduce the effectiveness of the anti-terrorism policy itself, he added. According to him, the ratification of the anti-terrorism law is contrary to the obligation of the Government of the Philippines to uphold human rights at the national, regional and global levels. According to the news agency, earlier the official representative of the Government of Indonesia on the fight against coronavirus Ahmad Yurianto said that the average death rate from COVID-19 in the country is higher than in the world.
