In 2019, the share of the illegal cigarette market in Latvia decreased
In 2019, the share of the illegal cigarette market in Latvia fell seriously, approaching the figures of Finland and Germany. In Q4, it was about 16.8% of the total. The State Revenue Service (SGD) of Latvia links this with the strengthening of control measures at the border, airport and ports of the country, writes the portal diena.lv. In 2019, the Customs Department of the SGD seized 59 million cigarettes, 29 tons of tobacco and about 6 tons of Kalyan mixtures, preventing losses of the treasury by 19 million euros. In the first months of this year 2.2 million cigarettes were confiscated. Smugglers typically use special containers in trains and vehicles. Bookmarks are made in loose loads of chips or coal. According to the Deputy Director of Customs Department of SGD Sandra Karcline-Admine, special technical devices are increasingly used in the arsenal of violators. X-ray equipment greatly facilitates the work of customs officers.
